Have you ever wanted Janet Leigh in Psycho to get her own back, seen yourself as John Wayne, Rita Hayworth or James Dean, thought of Marilyn Monroe as more than just a ‘candle in thewind’? Redcrosse: A Celebration of St. George

Date: 08 May 2011 (5.30pm)

Manchester Cathedral is part-dedicated to St George. It also has a particular commitment to the general cause of religious poetry. Since St. George’s Day in 2011 falls on Easter Saturday, we’re transferring our patronal festival to 8 May. And we’re observing it with an experimental liturgical event: a ‘fresh-poetry liturgy’, drawing in various ways on the inspiration of Edmund Spenser’s great 16th century epic The Faerie Queene; in particular Spenser’s strange reworking there of the St George legend.

We’ve assembled a team of distinguished poets, including Michael Symmons Roberts and Jo Shapcott, to work on this. At the same time we’ve also commissioned new music from Tim Garland of the jazz trio Acoustic Triangle. The Royal Holloway Choir will sing. And we’ll be introducing a pair of Catalan-style ‘giants’, an art project of the Booth Centre for the Homeless, representing the George and Dragon in Mark Cazalet’s altarpiece in the Cathedral’s Fraser Chapel.

In short, the aim is to reclaim the flag of St. George from those now seeking to co-opt it for a seedy sort of politics; with a truly bold celebratory event.

This is part of a larger national project, ‘The Faerie Queene Now’, which has been sponsored by the AHRC / ESRC Religion and Society, LCACE, PRS Foundation for Music and the Arts Council

Loop Social – A night of Spoken Word and Song

We’re not sure Macc’s seen anything quite like it before; Jo Bell, John Lindley and Jane Birch wax poetic and tell tall tales, while Helen Walford and friends sing harmonious. And we all down pints late into the night, so don’t miss it! But beware you won’t be able to book for this one. It’s first in, best sofa; last in, left out, but we’d still love to hear if you intend to come!
